What do you need to know?
Image sizes for website
Because SereneColombo.org is a large website, we need to make sure that our images are as small as possible while still looking great. Here are some guidelines for sizes and formats
A great image resize utility for Windows is FastStone Photo Resizer. It is small and easy to use. Please read Instructions for Resizing.
Definitions
Aspect Ratio or Shape
The aspect ratio is like the shape. So for example the aspect ratio of a square image is 1×1 (written sometimes as 1:1). Facebook likes to have images in the aspect ratio of 120×63. But the actual width in pixels should be 900px wide when we use it on our website and at least 1200px when we use it on Facebook.
File Size
This is how many kb the file takes up. Our website does not allow images larger than 250kb to be uploaded. But we always want to make the file as small as possible and still look good. See chart for guidelines.
Image Size
This is how many pixels wide and high an image is. This is different from the aspect ration or shape. We want to have the image size be as close to the size it will appear on the website. For example if we know that an image will only appear, at the most, as 500px wide, then there is no point in uploading an image 1200px wide.
Image type | Aspect Ratio | Max kb | Max width |
Featured Image: Youtube Video | 128:72 | 100kb | 900px |
Featured Image: normal | 120:63 | 100kb | 900px |
Square Quotations, Pali Word of Day | 1:1 | 150kb | 800px |
Full width banner (stretches across page) | 250kb | 1920-1500px |
NOTE: The maximum image file size you can upload is 250kb. if you need to upload a larger image, please speak to one of the Bhantes.
